Childhood Obesity

Childhood obesity has more than doubled in the past thirty years, and tripled in adolescents. While most of us think that nutrition is an issue best dealt with at home, there are things as teachers and administrators that we can do to encourage physical activity and better eating habits. This link provides key strategies for teachers, administrators, and parents, as well as children to combat this ever increasing problem.   1. This is interesting. I have posted a blog related to this issue. There are so many children struggling with this issue. We may think that as teachers there is nothing we can do about it, but there is. I suggest that we provide a healthy alternative for children in place of the the candy and other sweet treats. We can encourage a healthy life style and implement more interactive and physical activities within the curriculum provided.
    We should allow parents to take part in these measures as well. Come up with activities and healthy tasty alternative for practice at home. This will be sure to create awareness for the child and parents.

  2. This was a nice article. I had never thought before about how easy it could be to reward students with physical activity instead of food. With children so confined to their desks all day, it would likely be a welcome surprise to dance around or even go outside for a change. I also liked the idea of student conducted health surveys and healthy eating classroom policies- two very beneficial activities.
